Boating the canal lets you travel from coast to coast through the Great Glen. You will cross 22 miles of man-made cuttings and 38 miles of natural lochs. Most rentals operate from spring to autumn.

Do I need previous boating experience?

Experience requirements depend on the boat hire company.

Many cruiser hire companies provide basic training before you set off. You will learn how to steer, moor, and handle the locks. If you bring your own boat, you act as the skipper.

What are the maximum boat dimensions?

Your vessel cannot exceed 45.72 meters (150 ft) in length and 10.67 meters (35 ft) in beam.

The maximum freshwater draft permitted without special permission is 3.5 meters (11.48 ft). If your boat drafts over 3.5 meters, you must contact the Canal Office before arrival.

How long does it take to boat through the Caledonian Canal?

The minimum transit time to navigate the entire canal is 2.5 to 3 days.

This schedule allows enough time to pass through the 29 locks and 11 bridges. Boaters must arrive at locks and bridges in time for passage operations to complete before closing time.

How do I get a transit license?

You must purchase a short-term transit license through Scottish Canals.

If you hire a cruiser, the company often includes the license in the rental fee. If you bring your own boat, you need to book the license yourself. Costs depend on the vessel and license type.

What safety rules apply on the water?

Life jackets must be available for all crew members.

  • Children and non-swimmers must wear life jackets at all times.
  • Refuelling is strictly not permitted inside lock chambers.
  • When operating locks, open sluices only 2 inches (5 cm) at a time to minimize turbulence.

When is the best time to hire a boat?

Boat transit mostly operates from spring to autumn.

The canal undergoes winter maintenance closures during the colder months. Always pack a waterproof jacket and trousers for unpredictable Highland weather, even in the summer.
